Next time you're out looking for light bulbs for your home, consider your options and bear in mind a few factor that go into differentiating your options: individual bulb price, life span, lumens (brightness), and wattage/electricity cost (how much electricity it takes to light the bulb). Before you try to figure out which bulb you want to buy, consider what your goals are. Do you want to the longest lasting bulb you can find? Do you want the most efficient bulb? We tested the Spotlight LED bulb, which is made by the same manufacturer as the bulb we compared in our analysis (but with a lower lumen count), and we found it to have only a slightly less brightness than the traditional bulb. The LED spotlight also has the major drawback of featuring a very direct field of light, which makes it most useful only when aimed directly at what you want to light. So you need to get the proper LED bulb for the application that you need.

While the LED is more expensive than the incandescent up front, the former buries the latter in a pile of long term cost. Each individual setting—not to mention the user’s view’s on energy conservation—is going to call for a unique bulb. We've tried to give you basic data and tools to figure out which bulb is right for you.

Falling oil prices and surprisingly robust second quarter economic growth had convinced some analysts that the United States might skirt recession, with the help of timely tax refunds and the U.S. dollar's export boosting weakness.

However, a grim U.S. jobs report on Friday expanded the previous body of evidence suggesting the world's largest economy had already succumbed to the effects of the worst housing slump since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

"This is a very weak jobs report that screams recession," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

"It was shockingly weak."

The government's payrolls report showed the U.S. economy shed jobs for the eighth consecutive month in August and the unemployment rate shot up to a five year high of 6.1 percent.

Economists will now take off their rose tinted glasses as they anticipate this week's data on the hard pressed U.S. consumer, a recovering U.S. dollar, and the continuing saga of the U.S. credit crunch.

The big numbers due out in the United States are August retail sales and September consumer sentiment, both of which come out on Friday.

The figures will give an updated view of the beleaguered U.S. consumer, who has confronted job losses and soaring energy costs this year, and these reports could stand in sharp contrast to last month's report on strong growth in gross domestic product.

Falling oil prices which are currently near 5 month lows, may bolster consumer sentiment somewhat, but the underlying theme will be one of weakness, analysts say.

"By any metric other than GDP, the U.S. economy is in recession, and the labor market report reinforces this," said Edward McKelvey, senior economist at Goldman Sachs in New York.

"In terms of next week's data, its main implication will be to reinforce expectations of a weak retail sales report, as growth in wage and salary income remains subdued. Fed officials will see the report as one more reason why rate increases are not at all appropriate at this time," he said.

Some corners of the bond market already indicate investors are preparing for the possibility of interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve after suggesting for months that the U.S. central bank's next move would be an increase.

BAD TO WORSE

The shrinking job market is bad enough. To make matters worse, the slowing global economy will damp foreign demand for U.S. products.

The result could be a vicious cycle of weakness passed from one major economy to another. Tuesday's export figures from Germany, and Friday's euro zone industrial production may further clarify this process.

The euro zone economy suffered a contraction in the second quarter while Japan is thought to be on the brink of a recession or already in one.

Data from Japan, the world's second largest economy, includes the latest revision of second quarter GDP on Friday as well as July international trade on Wednesday.

The prospect of other major economies slowing has also weakened the euro and other currencies against the dollar. If this continues, it could further erode U.S. exports, which have been one of the few bright spots for the economy.

Against major currencies the U.S. dollar is near its highest in about a year, though it retreated slightly after the U.S. jobs report on Friday.

ADDING CLOUDS TO THE GLOOM

Adding to the gloom is the cloud that has been hanging over the U.S. financial sector since a credit crisis erupted last year in the wake of the mortgage debacle in the United States.

Merrill Lynch Co Inc, the world's largest brokerage, which was battered by over $40 billion in write downs, will incur fresh write downs, according to a Goldman Sachs research report. Goldman analyst William Tanona downgraded the stock to a "sell".

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc, the fourth biggest U.S. investment bank, also remains under pressure to raise capital. It has racked up large losses and still bears more than $60 billion of mortgage and commercial real estate exposure.

State controlled Korea Development Bank (KDB) is in talks to acquire or invest in Lehman, but any deal was thrown into doubt amid recent financial market volatility in South Korea.

But this week's data is likely to show that cash strapped U.S. consumers are focused on issues closer to home, such as jobs and energy prices.

Indeed, whether or not officials ultimately decide to call the recent U.S. downturn a recession, a determination which is traditionally done by the National Bureau of Economic Research, their pronouncement may carry little weight for workers facing job cuts and high gasoline prices.

"From most people's point of view it's just if the unemployment rate goes up this much you're in a recession," said Bob Mellman, senior economist and managing director at JP Morgan in New York.

In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Raymond said he told high ranking Chinese officials this week that the melamine "disaster" could eventually have a positive aspect if the country learns from the situation.

In two days of meetings with Chinese health and agriculture officials in Beijing, Raymond said one of his messages was: "You've got to take something like this and you have to change in the worlds' eyes and this is an opportunity for you to address the issue."

Raymond attended and was a speaker at the China International Food Safety Quality Conference this week in Beijing.

Thousands of Chinese infants have been sickened by melamine tainted formula and some have died. Melamine is a toxic chemical used in plastics and fertilizer.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials have said there are no infant formulas on the U.S. market with Chinese ingredients. The U.S. does, however, import thousands of tons of dairy products from China.

Just on Friday, the FDA announced that some Chinese instant coffee and tea beverages that contain dairy ingredients and are sold in North America may be contaminated with melamine and are being recalled by the manufacturer.

The U.S. imported 4,162 tons of Chinese dairy products last year and 1,750 tons in the first seven months of 2008, according to data maintained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D Conn., said Friday that all Chinese food imports should be suspect because of the melamine contaminations.

"Between pet food last year and baby formula this year, it would appear that no food product in China is immune from contamination," she said.

China came under fire last year after it was discovered melamine was substituted for protein supplements used in U.S. pet food.

Hybrid vehicles have received justifiable attention in the car industry's conservation effort and certainly automobiles are a big part of the energy puzzle. Home and commercial Lighting also represent significant consumption, accounting for 15 percent to 35 percent of all energy use (depending on whose numbers you believe). The workhorse incandescent lamp, evolved over so many years, remains in widespread use to be sure, but abysmal efficiencies typically well below 5 percent have spurred change.

Enter two technologies already helping and likely to grow as pressure mounts to reduce electricity consumption the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) and Led lamp. Both are moving toward, if not being legislated into, more widespread application in the search for conservation.

The former of these two has been on a steady march toward affordability, and Planet Analog editor Bill Schweber recently sent me a pile of CFLs, now available as sub $5 replacements for incandescent bulbs, as a not so subtle recommendation for a teardown.

But CFL is not alone, and Bill's hardware handout got me thinking more about the other contender in the game. Led lighting has made measured but steady progress as a viable replacement for the inefficient incandescent, and a high brightness LED "downlight" recently brought to market caught my eye. We'll look at examples of both here.

The figure marked a dip from annual growth of 20.9 percent in the first five months of the year.

"I agree that there has been progress in China," said Myron Brilliant of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "I just don't think right now we have seen it yield enough results for our companies."

The hearing was held by the Trade Policy Staff Committee, a panel of U.S. Trade Representative officials and other Bush administration figures. The hearing will help the panel prepare an annual report to Congress due in December on China's compliance with World Trade Organization obligations.

Michael Schlesinger of the International Intellectual Property Alliance said that, while the Chinese government has enacted laws to crack down on intellectual property crimes, those laws aren't strictly enforced. He added that a lengthy government approval process enables the widespread piracy of U.S. goods.

That process can take weeks and months, he said, while Internet pirates need only days to send software over the Internet and sell it on the street.

The piracy of books, DVDs and online gaming software and other entertainment goods is also a major problem, he said.

"The content approval process for games is taking far too long," Schlesinger said. He and other industry representatives called for an expedited and more "transparent" regulatory process and stricter enforcement of anti piracy laws.

Richard V. Kennedy Jr. of the P4 Coalition, representing the U.S. phosphorus chemicals industry, said China has recently imposed new export taxes that he said violates its WTO agreement. U.S. government and industry officials have said that China's export taxes drive up world prices of raw materials, putting foreign industries at a disadvantage when they sell their products in the Asian country.

Timothy P. Stratford, assistant U.S. Trade Representative for China Affairs who sits on the Trade Policy Staff Committee, said Chinese export tax increases are a "relatively recent development," and he said the issue would be a focus of future talks between the U.S. and China.

"We certainly are focused on this as one of the issues," Stratford said.

Guangdong Shunxiang Energy Saving Lighting Technology has developed a new kind of energy saving bulb that could save up to 70 percent of the electricity used by traditional incandescent bulbs.

The life of the light bulb could reach more than 60,000 hours, 10 times that of regular energy saving lamps and 100 times more than incandescent light bulbs, according to General Manager Lin Weihe.

"Our lamps with new technology only need to be changed every 10 years, but in the same period, a mercury vapor lamp or sodium vapor lamp would have to be changed 15 times," Lin told China Daily.

The company, headquartered in Chaozhou, Guangdong province, is displaying its latest products at the ongoing 10th China Hi tech Fair in Shenzhen.

The company plans to invest 500 million yuan ($73.10 million) in a new plant, which could be operational by 2010, with an annual production capacity of 3 million units.

European Union countries will ban the use of incandescent light bulbs in favor of energy efficient lightings, following the United States and Australia, by the end of this decade.

China is also actively promoting the use of energy saving lighting. It plans to sell at least 150 million highly efficient energy saving light bulbs from 2006 to 2010.

Cree, which currently has 2 , 3 and 4 inch wafer production lines, remarked that the barrier to LED lamps popularity is not coming from the technological side, but rather from the high prices.

Cree noted that an led light bulb from General Electric (GE) currently sells for US$34.99 at Walmart, but such products should see prices drop to US$20 in two years. Cress expects LED prices to reach US$0.1 per lumen by the end of 2009.

Those two trends are guiding the company as it continues to transform itself, reorganizing its divisions and jettisoning product lines while picking up others.

Long known in this country — when it’s not confused with the company that makes Phillips Milk of Magnesia — as a manufacturer of Magnavox televisions, Norelco shavers and Philips incandescent light bulbs, Royal Philips wants to get away from home electronics and instead sell hospital scanning and monitoring equipment and high tech light bulbs made with light emitting diodes.

“We were a technology driven company,” said Gerard J. Kleisterlee, the chief executive of Philips. “But that is only one element. Now we are focusing on care cycles. ‘Health and well being’ is a common theme that everyone works on.”

The company’s chief financial officer, Pierre Jean Sivignon, put it another way: “An uptick in world aging and chronic diseases will drive our business.”

Getting rid of divisions and rehabilitating others is nothing new to Philips. The company has shrunk, in terms of annual gross sales, by 30 percent over the last seven years, to 26.8 billion euros, or about $37.5 billion.

It continues to sell businesses. In 2006, it sold 80.1 percent of its semiconductor business. It reduced its share in LGPhilips LCD, a joint venture with LG Electronics of South Korea to make TV displays.

Philips never made any headway in the low margin, increasingly commoditized television business. It announced last April that it would cast off its American and Canadian TV operations and license the Philips brand to Funai in exchange for a royalty on sets sold. It has also ended TV sales in Australia and New Zealand.

It did not do much better with other home entertainment products. On Jan. 1, it will discontinue selling DVD, Blu ray and home theater surround sound devices in the American market. Funai, a Japanese company, will make and market the products with the Philips name. The company will continue to sell TVs in some markets, and it will also keep selling MP3 players, shavers, toothbrushes, baby care products, home appliances and portable music accessories. Only two years ago, half its revenue came from consumer electronics, but now it is less than 43 percent.

“I could see the day when they get out of TV in Europe,” said Simon Smith, director and equity analyst at Credit Suisse in London. Mr. Smith noted that in this low margin business, Philips “innovates around the edges,” to maintain profits.

Yet even though the world is simultaneously aging and becoming more environmentally conscious, the sudden economic downturn could change Philips’s short term fortunes. Last month, Philips said it would lay off 1,600 health care division employees, 5 percent of its work force, because of the recession. And it is unlikely that an led light bulb that costs more than $50 will find many eager buyers as companies and households cut back.

Mr. Kleisterlee wants to get Philips back to the size it was in 2000. “In five years, I want to grow Philips to a 30 billion euro ($37.9 billion) business,” he said.

To get there, Philips has gone on a buying spree. In the last two years it has picked up 16 companies, 11 of them in the United States, including some that specialize in health care and Lighting.

Philips bought Lifeline, a home health care monitoring system, and Respironics, which makes equipment to treat sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. The division already specializes in medical imaging, competing against General Electric and Siemens in advanced CT, MRI and X ray machines, and claims a 40 percent global market share (50 percent in the United States) for in patient monitoring, including ultrasound and other pregnancy monitoring equipment.

Philips also sells cardiac home monitors that transmit data to a doctor’s office, home defibrillators and a variety of out patient monitoring systems for assisted living operations.

Its new Lifeline division extends the reach beyond the hospital by monitoring 720,000 elderly or infirm at home customers in the United States and Canada. It is also working with an intriguing business model. “I don’t want to sell blood pressure cuffs and defibrillators,” said Ronald Feinstein, Philips Lifeline’s president. “I want to give them away and charge a monthly fee.”

Customers, who pay $35 to $45 a month, are given a pendant or a TV set top box that connects to Lifeline. If they experience a medical problem, they push a button on the device to summon help.

The company loses about 35 percent of its subscribers each year, mostly because of death. Nevertheless, the subscriber base has been growing about 10 percent a year. The company says it has 60 percent of the home monitoring market in the United States.

The final addition to the revenue stream: the 250 installers who show the subscribers how to use the devices also sell them other products, like fall detectors and automatic pill dispensers.

The second part of its shopping spree secured Philips a leading position in the market for the next generation of light bulbs that may eventually replace compact fluorescent bulbs. It bought Color Kinetics, a developer of advanced Led lighting products, and Genlyte, a lighting fixtures maker best known for its Lightolier brand.

Lighting is also expected to make important gains in emerging markets as consumers there gain more income. “One of the very first things people buy in emerging markets is light,” Mr. Sivignon said.

Most of the lighting will use Leds, or what the industry calls solid state lighting. Philips is spending heavily on the technology. The bulk of its research and development budget, about 5.2 percent of global lighting revenue, is used for LED research.

Philips expects that in two years, 20 percent of its lighting sales for commercial use will come from LEDs. The company is using demonstration projects to promote its vision of lighting’s future. The London Eye ferris wheel has been retrofitted with Philips LED products. Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, plans to use Philips LED lights exclusively on an island he owns near Connecticut to cut his power consumption. Philips has also bid on a project to light the Empire State Building.

LED bulbs typically use one tenth the power of traditional light bulbs and last up to 20 times as long. But their prices remain high — a LED that could replace a $1 incandescent light bulb or a $2 compact fluorescent bulb now costs about $60. So until volumes go up and prices fall, the bulbs will mostly be used in commercial settings, not residential.

Mr. Kleisterlee said, “Without it, we would have had a dying business. The world wants more lighting and more efficient lighting.”

led lights not only use less power and they last longer. But they aren't the smart choice just for the holidays.

"This is an LED light bulb, this is the light bulb of the future," he said.

LED's have got a bright future, but they are in their infant stage compared to traditional and energy saving compact fluorescent lights, so they cost more, But they are catching on fast.

"We were looking for a nightlight that wasn't electricity powered, but battery powered," said Daniel Abenhaim.

Abenheim found his solution in this battery operated, motion detecting LED.

When you enter a dark room or hallway, it lights up, and seconds after you leave, it goes dark.

Most of these run on common AAA batteries that can hold a charge for months. They're ideal for Lighting up hallways, bathrooms and closets but they do have some weaknesses.

"Keep in mind these little devices are low in light output. They aren't like a table lamp, you're not going to read by them," said Terry McGown, American Lighting Association.

But they work during power outages and they have no mercury, so they are safer to throw away than fluorescents. And experts say using them inside and out could save average users $10 per month in energy costs.

Standard LED light bulbs can cost up $40, but holiday lights are competitively priced, and motion detecting battery LED's can be found in most hardware stores for $10 to $20 each.

Most outdoor LED lighting, like traditional garden lighting, typically uses a 12v DC low voltage power supply from a mains transformer installed indoors. There the similarities end though, because LED garden lights use only 10% as much electricity as traditional incandescent bulbs or halogen lamps.

The reason is simple; LED light is produced by exciting electrons to emit photons (light), whereas traditional light bulbs burn a filament which gives off an incidental amount of light along with all the heat. These are fundamentally different approaches to the process of producing light. LEDs are deliberately engineered to emit light and nothing else; incandescent bulbs are essentially small heaters that emit light only as a by product.

For garden lighting then, outdoor LED lights are ideal because of these properties of running cool and using negligible amounts of electricity. It is also worth mentioning that most LED garden lights have an effective lifespan of a decade or more, thereby reducing maintenance requirements.

LED garden lights come in all manner of guises. The most common colors are white and blue, but other colors are also available as well as color changing LED lights. One of the most noticeable characteristics of LED garden lights is how crisp and pure they look. The colors tend to be extremely vibrant with an almost gemstone quality sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, citrine yellow, diamond white. Though it is possible to use filters and diffusing screens to tone things down, which in itself opens up further effects and design ideas.

As well as variety in colors and brightness, outdoor LED lights are also available in any number of different fixtures. LED floodlights, wall wash effects, rock lights, embedded patio and deck lights, bollards, lanterns, spikes, pagodas, integrated in garden ornaments and submerged in ponds. Just for starters. Two of the most common choices through are outdoor LED spotlights and LED deck lights.

LEDs are well suited as garden spotlights since LED light tends be directional by nature. They also often have a good Colour Rendering Index which measures how lifelike and vibrant the area being lit appears. The items to check when choosing LED garden spotlights are: brightness (even a 1w LED in a dark garden is surprisingly bright); beam angle (how spread out or focussed the light is); and "color", meaning both the actual color (as in red or blue etc) and the "color temperature" (how "cool" or "warm" the light appears).

LED deck lights are one of the most versatile forms of garden lighting available. You can use them as intended, flush fitted into decking boards, or experiment with many other applications. LED deck lights are obviously highly robust and able to withstand quite a pounding (literally) as well as extremes of weather; they're also cheap, lightweight and simplicity itself to install.

Just about any piece of wood, or indeed any solid material, that you can drill a hole into and feed cables through can have LED deck lighting fitted into it. For cheap and easy pathway lighting for example, just hammer in some short wooden stakes at suitable intervals, drill apertures to accept whatever size, shape or color deck light you want to use, feed the cables along the ground (I use old garden hose pipe buried just below the surface) and that's about it. You can fit LED deck lights pointing up, down, sideways, any which way you please in fact.

This has been a quick look at "wired" outdoor LED lighting, but there is also the wire free world of outdoor solar lighting to consider.
